New Sustainability Movement Initiatives by Fashion Designers

26 Oct

The fashion industry creates new looks every season with a fast turnover rate of goods, leading to the creation of jobs, consumption of goods, and profit for companies. However, the potential negative long term consequences for the environment are also difficult to ignore when sometimes nonrenewable natural resources are part of the overall process. Fashion designers, however, are starting to realize the impact they are making and are beginning to take initiatives to reduce their environmental impact. Sarah Carpenter for the LA Times writes in her October 14th article “Designers, brands take steps toward sustainable fashion” about how the fashion industry is beginning to implement greener design methods and materials. Now, fashion houses from Gucci to Stella McCartney are  thinking outside of the customer’s needs to have the latest trendsetting item, to how the consumer can help be part of a process that helps, rather than hurts the environment. Overall, initiatives to use biodegradable and renewable materials in clothing, accessories and shoes will take the fashion industry forward and past the days of only being able to recycle clothing through thrift stores.

Recyling Jeans Effort Partnership Between American Eagle and Cotton Inc.

14 Oct

Everyone owns at least one pair of old jeans that they no longer wear. Now there is a great new way to recycle them!

American Eagle Outfitters has partnered with Cotton Inc for a second year in a row to offer customers a way to recycle their old jeans and to also get a shopping discount! Old jeans are transformed into Ultra-Touch Denim Insulation for New Orleans area homes that Habitat for Humanity will be constructing. Although this offer is only between October 3-14th, 2012, this combination is the best of both worlds!

Video on Recycle. Rejean.

More retailers should do this to help the fashion industry be a greener industry while also helping customers have a way to give back to the community!
